Beverage brands ask us constantly: should we switch to PLA straws? The honest answer from our factory floor is “it depends — and PLA is not automatically the greener choice in 2026.”
The regulation changed the math
EU PPWR (in force August 12, 2026) restricts compostable packaging to specific applications and requires it to be designed for material recycling, not just compostable. A PLA bottle, for example, is not compost-credentialed unless it fits those narrow cases — it must recycle through standard streams. So “PLA = good” is no longer a safe assumption.
PLA vs PET, straight
| PLA straw | PET straw | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | bio-based (corn starch) | fossil or rPET |
| Composts at home | generally no (needs industrial compost) | no |
| Recycles in PET stream | no (contaminant) | yes |
| Heat tolerance | softens in hot drink | stable |
| Clarity | good | excellent |
What we recommend
- Cold drinks, recyclability priority → PET straw (ideally rPET), because it joins the PET recycling stream your bottle already uses.
- Hot drinks → PET, since PLA softens.
- A mandated compostable use case → only then specify certified PLA with the right infrastructure.
Our PLA straw line exists for brands that need it, but we will tell you plainly when PET is the better call.
