On August 12, 2026, the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) moved from directive to binding law — with fines. One requirement hits beverage brands directly: tethered caps on single-use drink containers, so the closure stays attached after opening and actually gets recycled.
What PPWR changes for lids
PPWR is the most consequential plastics law in EU history. Key points for caps and closures:
- Tethered caps on beverage containers (from the existing SUP framework, now enforced under PPWR).
- Recycled content: 30% rPET in PET beverage bottles by 2030, rising to 65% by 2040.
- PFAS limits and heavy-metal caps on food-contact packaging, effective August 12, 2026.
- EPR registration in each member state and a harmonized label from 2028.
Non-EU brands selling into the EU must comply too — shipment refused, fines, or a marketing ban otherwise.
How our lid line already complies
We do not wait for a customer to ask. Our aluminum easy-open and full-open lid production holds:
- Hinge designs that keep the cap attached after opening (tethered).
- Food-contact grades free of targeted PFAS and within heavy-metal limits.
- Dimensional consistency so the lid seats on our 202 neck every time.
We also document compliance per batch, so an EU-bound brand can show the technical file and declaration of conformity PPWR expects.
A sourcing caveat brands should know
A new EU implementing regulation (EU 2026/1425) restricts which recycled content counts toward the target: from July 2026 to November 2027, only PCR collected and processed inside the EU/EEA qualifies. Asian-made rPET is excluded from the calculation in that window. If your EU story depends on rPET, plan the feedstock origin now.
